Welcome to Black Arts Movement Houston
Welcome to Black Arts Movement Houston
Historically, the Black Arts Movement was the name given to a group of politically motivated black poets, artists, dramatists, musicians, and writers who emerged in the wake of the Black Power Movement. The Black Arts Movement was formally established in 1965 when Amiri Baraka opened the Black Arts Repertory Theatre in Harlem. The synergy between creatives was a nod to the communal legacy of Black people.
Black Arts Movement Houston (BAM) exists to champion Black artists, uplift Black communities, and celebrate the creativity that has always shaped Houston.
We support artists across disciplines, create spaces for storytelling and cultural pride, and develop programs rooted in Black joy, legacy, and excellence. From performances and events to community gatherings and youth engagement, BAM centers Black voices and ensures they are seen, supported, and celebrated.
As Houston continues to grow, BAM is building the platforms and partnerships that keep Black art and culture at the heart of the city’s creative future.
This is more than an organization—it’s a movement.
Welcome to BAM.
